Image below is also Table Rock but rendered in acrylics on canvas paper. Recently, it sold after the local art crawl in Historic South End, Charlotte, NC. The same paper was used but the bottom image ended up being more vibrant.

Part of the Blue Ridge Mountain chain, “Table Rock”  is the “most visible symbol” in the piedmont region of NC and features a unique rock formation.  Senators and Authors have written about Table Rock, its admired by botanists for its flora and its peak makes for a quick hike.

Comments welcome. All images are for sale. This pastel is 9″ x 13″- w/o a mat or frame sold this last week in my studio in Historic South End. Bittersweet seeing it go to a new home, but art is about creating and sharing it, so Missy will enjoy the scene as much as I did.

ECO Art of the Carolinas

ECO ART OF THE CAROLINAS THEME born out of inspiration…..

surfaced with my belief in preserving the beauty and health of the environment- the land. My appreciation of the natural beauty in nature was born in my youth when I admired the mists rising off of the Appalachians and the Blue Ridge and grew from my travels.  I am drawn to paint various landscapes, marshscapes, seascapes often of wild lands and often including water imagery.  My primary subject matter interest began with the ecosystems that represent change between the land and sea, including marsh environments and mangrove forests.  I hope via my website to promote awareness of the dynamics that thrive in these fragile ecosystems.

About a year ago I posted “daily paintings”- which were small exercises such as the one above; however, life got in the way and I had to take on multiple roles and fit alot more into my day and this ritual about ended for me. I hope to return to the page more these days.

Last image taken as far I can go with it, I believe. Do you think it is done and how about the name “Pink Light”? 9 x 12 image. Sennelier pastels. I dry mounted my pastel paper onto foam core to create a transportable work surface and hinged to that a reverse mat cut from the same material (foam core). Even if you chose to use fixative on the last layer or during the process, a few flakes will fall with pastels, especially with the softer brands. I chose to stop using fixative after the first 2 layers, that way the final layers are not dulled down.

Pastel Colors used: 

Sky- 2 shades of peach, one light and one medium value blended together; 2 shades of pink blended and close in value; 1 cool lavender and 1 soft sky blue. Rembrandt brand “light sky blue” is a good choice and can be used in tandem with other blues you end up collecting, or it can be used alone as I did here. 

Landmass- Nu Pastel brand “confederate blue” with bits of sky color dropped in at will. Choose paler and cooler shades of blue for the most distant trees. Drop in some of the sky colors in the land as you move into the midground. I have started using dark, cool greens and greeen-blue shades for the brush near the horizon line.  

To attend any Burke Arts Council pastel Summer Art Class held in the Jail House Gallery call 703.433.7282 to sign up or email admin@burkearts.org to join the next scheduled group. Weekly get together pastel sessions are after work from 6-8pm.  All skill levels are welcome. As artists, we share together a evening of fun and creativity. Bring your favorite vacation photograph to work from, pastel paper and a beginner set of chalk pastels. Fees: $30/member/$35 non-member

I had alot of fun completing this image while attending a plein air workshop that Karen White Chambers taught and hosted at Folly Beach, SC, near Charleston. 

Karen has a 2009 mountain air workshop planned for this year and I highly recommend it; there is something about immersing yourself outside in the elements that studio work cannot give you.

“PALE BLUE MARSH”  above is a really soft image and a fragile symbol of our landscape. It reminds me of calm, light and sunshine –all warm words and images that are evoked via the pastel medium– even with the use of chalky cool colors used in the foreground, meandering through the sloughs and leading to the marshmallow sky. This image not only finds water for me – it holds water, just like the trough depression does for the little critters that live there.

$1500. until I think about it for awhile…

I am awakening. We are more than just pure existence of form. Things are becoming clearer. Life is good. I am going to add this image to my website www.rlistudios.com. It is an expression of my mood- happiness and paradoxically, saddness in the present moment. 

Whenever something tragic or loss occurs do this- take one small baby step towards doing something special for yourself- and by doing so, you remain open, open to life. Yield to beauty. Surrender to what is. Think of opportunity, the old saying…”when one door closes, another one opens.” 

I returned recently from a seaside retreat, hosted by Maureen Ryan Griffin, so refreshed…from taking in the marsh, the cool breeze off the ocean, the night air and the smell of dinner from the nearby restaurants. At 5:30 am, after watching the sunrise over the ocean, the bug got me again and I finished this oil.
