Art talk: Today my girlfriend Deb – a painter and sculptor- actually we are all a label of sorts- and I had our Artist’s Date which is simply exploring a new adventure, finding that daily inspiration. Venturing around town for a cafe latte, a lite Japanese lunch, a weigh-in at weight-watchers (yeah; we decided to shake up our lives, keep a very, fast pace, return all phone calls and walk the dog more). Deb is my unpredictable, high energy soul who learns to fly a twin engine plane and she is looking to open up a B&B soon ! When she finds the right inn- she can use her most recently earned credentials (as a reverend) to marry say her guests at the soon to be B & B. (I’ve got news for her, I would: stay in her B& B, let her marry me,- and l should explain here its all about “self-analysis” and how doing so taps into the realm of human creativity as I have done to reveal a process. When you realize a truth its like you are starting over with your thoughts and what is important. So, I would even provide limbs for her funky gauze-cast sculptures, but no amount of voo-doo, karma, synchronicity, proverbial wisdom or even lucky rabbit’s foot could get me on another two prop plane in this lifetime. (I did that in France, been there and seriously can bypass repeating any of that pie-in-the-sky mile high club, especially with my girlfriend who I know likes gin and tonic as much as me). Meaning again, there are some things you do with your girlfriends and some things you don’t. Reckless is not an option. And, in my case small planes are nice to look at. My blogs are more about “creativity” and the change that occurs once you use this energy you have, AND once you reveal that process you have unearthed some new conclusions. Maybe you have identified some personally meaninngful goals and have let go of some “stuff” or baggage that you once dragged behind you, or thought you once needed? We often need far less than what we think we need. Creativity in my case is the human ability to cause events to happen because as you can see in the image above it is not especially “artistic” although one of my cousins hung it in her house. It is an exercise in being “intuitive” and looking within myself and making use of “good energy”- and it is a ritual I personally look forward to.

The above small pastel I cranked out tonight to show-up for the canvas measures 10″ x 12″ on Wallis paper and I named it “Happy Clouds Over The Ocean.” As always, inspiration for me is born in stillness. This ritual that I am able to set aside out of my day gives me an increasingly clear sense of self. In this case, I cherish my friends- all of them!

Quote for Daily Painters: Every single statement you make about yourself, to a friend or even to yourself becomes your truth. My life changed in 2002 and since then I have been on the road I was meant to be on all along. My decisions now I allow to evolve from my heart and a feeling level and I hold each situation up to the light. Every situation then becomes an opportunity to grow. Every time I speak my truth it is as if the fog is lifting.

Rough Going Seas: Classical Mini-Series- a painting a day by Eco Art Girl

August 28, 2007

Tuesday

Art talk: In oil on masonite below is “Rough Going Seas” which measures 9 x 12 and follows as a quick study, part of my ongoing “daily painter” series.

rough-going-seas2-blog.jpg

This painting is all about mood, and the feeling of being alone. I used oils, my lean painting and glazing medium made up of : 1 part stand oil, 1 part damar varnish and 5 parts odorless mineral spirits turpenoid (you can use turpentine here !) (If you use mineral spirits in the mix it will be cloudy and not work; this is what happens when your bottles are not labeled!  I recently switched from turpentine to turpenoid (expensive) then to mineral spirits due to costs and odor, and mineral spirits is what I use when I buy a store bought medium only. When I mixed up the 3 part mixture of stand, damar and turpentine it lasted a long time since it was allocated for the nightly posts,” I mix up a very small jar and use medium sparingly. One empty peach jar size of this mixture can lasts me months for these small scale paintings.” So, the lesson is label your jars (!)  and decide if you want to buy the readily available mediums at your local store and use the odorless mineral spirits with them or go thru the process of mixing the potion that will ONLY work with turpentine or turpenoid (low odor version). At least that was my experience.

Easy Way to Clean Your Brushes Without Creating a Lot of Mess or Garbage: A few swipes over the next block of masonite you plan to paint on (or canvas) will remove much of the leftover paint in the ferrule- and eliminate the need for using many paper towels or much mineral spirit. Usually, the mother color left in your brush can find its way diffused in the background or under painting and who knows if it will be ever seen at all, or perhaps blended into one of your initial colors used when you pick up your brush again on this new painting?

Then, remove any more paint with just one paper towel usually works followed by swish in mineral spirits, before you coat bristles with corn oil in a circular motion in a small tin cup. Next follow with a dime size amount of Dawn detergent and mix until corn or vegetable oil and Dawn create a foam-like mix and rinse until water is clear. Larger brushes may require several oil and Dawn mix rinses.

Daily Quote for Painters: I can’t find one to top yesterday’s quote just yet.

Ambiance to Paint by: I have jumped on the ipod craze and now how a music shuffle of favorites like: Shania Twain’s Up!, Apples Peaches Pumpkin Pie by Jay & The Techniques, and all the songs I have mentioned in my past posts. Noticed with the new studio artists joining CAL today, we all have a common love of music and art and a room of ipods we paint with.

LIVE SUMMER MARSH Painting: Classical Mini-Series- a painting a day by roselynn

July 3, 2007

Monday, July 2, 2007

Art talk: This small canvas I found in the stow-away bin in the studio . The canvas measures only 5″ x 7″ and I had kept for some reason a gunmetal frame of the same dimension. It is good to use the things we have so in the following weeks I will be “spring cleaning” and making good use of all the stocked materials I have around the house (without buying more). This series of small paintings is part of a daily painting ritual until I reach the 100 mini-series mark.

This estuary series was initially inspired by the natural beauty of the Charleston and Folly Beach area, on a trip I took with a group of girlfriends- (oil and pastel painters from across the Western Piedmont area of North Carolina and Raleigh, Missouri and Atlanta.) I hope to promote environmental conservation and awareness through these paintings. Wetlands are reportedly the number one threatened ecosystem in the world today. Losing our wetlands to the impending threat of global warming, as well as to over development, does impact our ecosystem and ultimately our quality of life.

I have been influenced by travels and living in various places abroad and in the Carolinas. I bring to my work an appreciation of my “personal translation” of the environment of each place. “Fish croak, waterfalls gush, trees and pluff mud scent the air, twilight descends, and such is the stuff that begins the life of a painting. These are the joys we should all be concerned about passing along to our children, environmental wealth,” I believe.

A graduate of St. Mary’s in Raleigh and Queen’s University in Charlotte, I began work as an artist while living in France after college and becoming charmed by the cultural lifestyle. Thereafter, I was awarded the opportunity to illustrate for LTE, Inc. and publish my first material in a book. A primary influence in pulling me back into the creative life was Julia Cameron’s The Artists Way.

Walkin’ into the Fog: Classical Mini-Series Oil- a painting a day by roselynn

June 29, 2007

Friday, June 29, 2007

Art Talk:

Back to posting as a daily painter, below you will find “Walkin into the Fog” and that is how it happened for me; I kept tapping into my soul to find out what images had a “hold on me.” Internal tapping. Not copying someone else because that wouldn’t be you! (If others do copy you, and they will because they do not understand the power of looking inward themselves to find that direction of creative energy- and it is powerful, more powerful when it comes truly from within and is a source of inspiration. As the saying goes, when they think they have caught up with you, you will be …long gone, long gone. This is a reality because those that are truly focused inward are directed to MOO-OVE, evolve and again, transform.)

Unconceal your true self. Look at your buying habits, places YOU frequent as a clue, repetitive tasks you do as a clue, thought processes you have, what you repeatedly linger over, read about, collect. If you start taking inventory a theme will emerge. It’s been there all along.

walkin-into-the-fog2.jpg

“Walkin into the Fog” I may paint on a bit more just to build up the paint to sit thicker on the board, but I probably won’t change the values because this was how the day felt.

Image size 5 x 7

Overall 9 x 11 in worn, metal and wood frame

Oil on panel; $30

There is a small reflection of light in the lower right area from the shadows on my back patio this am.

This is a very small image, so I did 2 today; the next one is “Shrimp Boat in the Mist at Night.”

shrimp-boat-in-the-mist-at.jpg

“Shrimp Boat in the Mist at Night”

Image size 5 x 7

Overall 9 x 11

Oil on panel; I will have a frame for it later.

Both images are very small compared to what I am working on in the studio entitled “Land on the Verge of Water,” which can be seen on my back studio wall in Historic South End: Studio #14 for me, and part of my ongoing series called “Eco Art of the Carolinas.” More info is on my website www.rlistudios.com.

land-on-the-verge-of-water.jpg

Land on the Verge of Water is in progress and measures 40″ x 50,” so quite a difference in size here.
Song for today (before I forget it) has to be Christine McVie’s “Got a Hold on Me” because that is what these images do for me, and although the lyrics seem sad the song is upbeat and perky. I still have this album! (Album, well, that dates me).

Written by Christine McVie and Todd Sharp.
…You’re liftin’ me up
Never let me down
And I smile
Whenever you’re around
Ooh and I’ve got a feeling
It’ll work out right
Can’t stop thinking about you
Every day and night
Chorus:
Ooh I’ve got a love (I got somebody)
This love (got a hold on me)
Yeah I’ve got a love (I got somebody)
This love (got a hold on me)
Well, I’ve been in love
And I’ve lost
I can count the tears
But I can’t count the cost
Oh, I’ve been down
I’ve been used
Now I know, I know, I know
That I just can’t lose
Chorus

Quote for daily painters: ( and those seekers out there!)

Ask yourself now: DO I EXIST?

Yes, I Exist.

But As What? Do you really know who you are?

Ask yourself;

What Am I?

Where is that I?

Friday

Art Talk: I have been out of town for a few days and could not paint or read. No music either = not such a good time, but I am back at the task of joining the “daily painters” and with posting a painting a day. Above you will see I put in the red mangroves from earlier last week.

Red Mangrove Mania: Just in case you are following what I paint called “Eco Art of the Carolinas” (and, sometimes Florida here), I am interested in those “special places or ecosystems that represent change,” between land and sea, be it marsh environments, called “wetlands,” estuarine passages, (where salt meets fresh water), and for today mangrove forests–all beneficial, ecosystems abundant with life forms that sustain a diversity of life way out of proportion with their size.

Mangrove forests form a barrier between land and sea and it is this I have painted for today. They have a stabilizing value and prevent erosion, filter water and maintain water quality and clarity. I will post more on my website, www.rlistudios.com about wild mangrove forests and how they protect the land from the sea and the sea from the land.

I call this image “Walkin Trees in the Keys” because the Keys where we have vacationed for 10 years are lush with red mangrove trees. Their thick twisted aerial roots above the water’s surface appear to be “walkin” and take-on an almost human-like quality with roots that arch and stretch out like limbs. Watch for other paintings on these mesmerizing “wicked” trees.

Quote for daily painters:

Need something about attitudes and lattitudes if anyone has a good affirmation? All I can think of is a Jimmy Buffet song and I should be “walkin to the goal.” OK, here it is:

“Your own true self is your ultimate teacher. The outer teacher is merely a milestone. It is only your inner teacher that will walk with you to the goal, for it is the goal. “- Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj

If you want another good book for goal setting as it relates to art try “Living the Artist’s Way” by Paul Dorrell. More info in my next post.

Ocean Potion:Classical Mini-Series Oil-a painting a day by roselynn

Thursday, June 21, 2007

Art talk: Today’s painting a day is of the Atlantic Ocean. See for yourself. Afterwards it will be posted on my website www.rlistudios.com with a pay pal link. This is my painting-a-day and remains true to my series entitled “Eco Art of the Carolinas” which focuses on marshscapes, seascapes and estuaries- the environment our children will inherit.

Environmental wealth can be seen in my focus “ECO ART OF THE CAROLINAS.” Pastel marshscapes and my oil paintings I hope highlight the natural beauty of marsh views, ocean vistas and coastal estuaries that I am able to capture with a photograph, or recall from memory. I hope to raise the local consciousness about the importance of one of the planet’s most critical natural resources: our coastal marshes and the adjoining coastal waters. This series on the wetlands, what I call “ECO ART,” promotes awareness of the dynamics that thrive in these fragile ecosystems. Wetlands provide essential needs to humanity and it is this message I convey on my website and post on my blog: www.roselynnrlistudios.wordpress.com This energy provided by nature propels my art along. These vibrant ecosystems, the area between land and water support life itself- environmental health and humanitarian health are one and the same. I am grateful there is an abundance of land and special places which provides great fuel for a working artist. I never grow tired of images such as these to paint.

Pink Sunset Marsh: Eco Art of the Carolinas- by roselynn

June 21, 2007

Wednesday, June 20, 2007

Art talk: This photo reference was actually in the Florida Keys. There is just a hint of a red mangrove root in the water. Maybe I will detail in with a small brush a few walkin surface roots later?

Mangroves grow along the water’s edge and are identified by their tangled, “reddish-prop roots” which have earned them their title of “walking trees.”

People living along the south Florida coasts benefit from mangroves. Mangrove forests protect from storm winds, waves, and floods. Mangroves can also help prevent erosion by stabilizing shorelines with their specialized root systems.

pink-sunset-marsh-2.jpg

Available on my website www.rlistudios, these daily painting exercises are meant to be fast. If you are just tuning in, I am posting a daily painting, or progress on a work, part of a series of classical mini-paintings that measure 9 x 12 on board. They make up the theme I have adhered to on my website called “Eco Art of the Carolinas.” Occasionally, an odd painting slips in, but I tend to stick to coastal estuary scenes, marshscapes and seascapes.

I use an all purpose lean painting and glazing medium from start to finish of 1 part stand oil, 1 part damar varnish and 5 parts turpentine. You can choose the odorless turpentine, I don’t, so when I can I will substitute mineral spirits instead.

Quote for daily painters:

“You must begin to think of yourself as becoming the person you want to be.”- David Viscott

(I wonder if I am there yet?)

Background Ambiance: (Thanks to my Rhapsody subscription)

“I’ve got sunshine on a cloudy day

When its cold outside

I’ve got the month of May” _ lyrics by Smokey Robinson.

Is there anything more cheerful to think about when you look at this, or to think about when you paint yourself a scene such as this?

Pick up at your local art store a book on painting and a few supplies to get started. You will be amazed at the positive spin it will have on your day. Your first few trys may bring a laugh but keep trying. This isn’t as difficult as golf and is a “learned” hobby that takes much less coordination.

End; Made it another day.

sea-fans-kelp-web-archive.jpg

I sold this one but due to time restraints over the weekend, I didn’t paint. Sometimes, we rest in the process. Sometimes, we put others first.

It was a collage and reminded me of the ocean and what lives there.

I used inks and acrylics on bristol board.

Picture Yourself on a Boat on a River- a painting a day

June 12, 2007

Monday, June 11, 2007-by roselynn

Art talk: Part of an ongoing ritual of a-painting-a-day or the process of daily-painting (on somedays)….this image was done from my photograph I took back in April of the marsh.

The palette I chose was ivory black, ultramarine blue, raw umber, yellow ocher, naples yellow, alizarine, lemon yellow, cadmium red and permalba white.

Quote for daily painters:

“There’s beauty in the silver singing river, There’s beauty in the sunrise in the sky, But none of these and nothing else can match the beauty That I remember in my true love’s eyes”- Bob Dylan

“The discipline of the writer is to learn to be still and listen to what his subject has to tell him”- Rachel Carson

Background Ambience:

Around 8pm I tapped into Magic 94.1 FM out of the Lexington area on my radio dial. Great hum-along songs to paint by like “Thunder Island”- Maybe you have heard of it by JayFerguson? Dates back a few years to ‘78.

……Sha-la-la-la-la-la my lady
In the sun with your hair undone
Can you hear me now calling your name
From across the bay
A summer’s day laughing and a-hidin’
Chasing love out on Thunder Island

She was the color of the Indian summer
And we shared the hours without number
Until one day when the sky turned dark
And the winds grew wild
Caught by the rain and blinded by the lightnin’
We rode the storm out there on Thunder Island

I held her close
Until the storm passed
And we fell down laughing in the wet grass
Both our bodies drying in the sunshine, sweet sunshine
So, sha-la-la-la-la-la my lady……
