“Mangroves”: A-painting-a-day of the land in oil or pastel series by Charlotte Artist/ Eco Art Girl

For awhile- our regular schedule has been upside down  and I have had to postpone any creative works or posts.  But being a Charlotte painter by design, eventually duty calls and I am inspired to return again to the page to my painting-a day-posts. This latest entry is called simply “Mangroves.” I used nu-pastel - which are hard pastels and sennelier pastel -which are very soft pastels on Wallis paper. Image measures 12′ x 17″ using float mount presentation on mat board, with archival mat and framing.  David with The Living Room framed this for me and selected the frame- which closely matches the pastels. The frame color is close to verdigris with a black lip (edge).

I painted mangroves because I am interested in those “special places or ecosystems that represent change,” between land and sea, be it marsh environments, called “wetlands,” estuarine passages, (where salt meets fresh water), and for today mangrove forests–all beneficial, ecosystems abundant with life forms that sustain a diversity of life way out of proportion with their size.

Mangrove forests form a barrier between land and sea and it is this I have painted “in a flowing kind of way” for today. They have a stabilizing value and prevent erosion, filter water and maintain water quality and clarity. I will post more on my website, www.rlistudios.com about wild mangrove forests and how they protect the land from the sea and the sea from the land.

Anyone interested in this can reach me on my website: www.rlistudios.com/ my contact tab.

My Studio location: 1517 Camden Road in the Historic South End design district of Charlotte, NC- is by appointment but can be viewed daily 11-3 during CAL hours because I share a small work space that is part of a co-op of community artists within CAL (Charlotte Art League).

Most of my art images explore the land in the form of seascapes, marshscapes and coastal views and record for me the viewer and my children our travel-places we have fond memories of.

Marshscapes and coastal estuaries pull at my heart -so these images I post fuel my process. More images and information can be found on my website: www.rlistudios.com.

RLISTUDIOS dedicated to showcasing ECO ART OF THE CAROLINAS, marshscapes and depictions of coastal estuaries, can be found in North Carolina Community Treasures (a 263 page compilation-resource guide aboutNorth Carolina places, the business people who live there, their products and their passions). This hardbound, coffee table book will guide you to some of the most inviting places across the state, from the warm Atlantic shores to the breathtaking Appalachian Mountains. Also some of my art created in 2008 will be in a “new” book due out in the next several months with an emphasis on the coastline communities of SC, NC as well as Georgia. “Mangroves” I hope will be included in this project.
