Mini purple paintings at work again….below is a marsh “demo” I did while hosting a Wednesday night pastel class thru the Burke Arts Council. We all had a great time.
surfaced with my belief in preserving the beauty and health of the environment- the land. My appreciation of the natural beauty in nature was born in my youth when I admired the mists rising off of the Appalachians and the Blue Ridge and grew from my travels. I am drawn to paint various landscapes, marshscapes, seascapes often of wild lands and often including water imagery. My primary subject matter interest began with the ecosystems that represent change between the land and sea, including marsh environments and mangrove forests. I hope via my website to promote awareness of the dynamics that thrive in these fragile ecosystems.
RLISTUDIOS dedicated to showcasing ECO ART OF THE CAROLINAS, marshscapes and depictions of coastal estuaries, can be found in North Carolina Community Treasures (a 263 page compilation-resource guide aboutNorth Carolina places, the business people who live there, their products and their passions). This hardbound, coffee table book will guide you to some of the most inviting places across the state, from the warm Atlantic shores to the breathtaking Appalachian Mountains. For your copy click: http://treasuresof.com/BuyBook.aspx
I have been away from my blog but not too far away from art. Having recently re-located to the piedmont area to oversee my mom’s care plan and care for her, I, have had to re-adjust my schedule and be creative as to ways to incorporate art into my now busier schedule. Days are filled with more travel and the anticipated planning that goes with that. As always, I keep a few books in tow because I frequently find myself in “waiting rooms,” mostly doctors appointments I have to shuffle to between my kids, myself and others. Here are a few books geared towards the artist in yourself:
“WRITING THE ARTIST STATEMENT”- by ARIANNE GOODWIN
And an “affirmative visualization” is in the title of this one – a book by a former CFP- imagine that?
“The Affluent Artist” by Rick DiBasio…The author has a way of relating with creative types. He speaks our language.
Yes, I break crayons, I know I am a little different, and yes, I do resonate with the word “artist.” But, yes, I do also read the Wall Street Journal online, and I am a better than average investor BECAUSE of my persnicky “artists” traits- which I would rather think of as “skills.” Artists learn early on that money is a limited resource- you bet. Why not put all that adaptability to good use? Rick’s book is a good resource and a reminder to each of us to check our emotions at the door in the business world, but trusts your instincts while there. He’ll keep asking you throughout the book, “Psst….do you have this, do you have that?” I personally, have made friends with a CFP, CTA and a lawyer now (I have these for specific work to be done). For more checklist items that will guide you along as you expand your horizons on your creative journey, you can check out his book via his blog at: http://affluentartist.wordpress.com/
Now, returning to the ritual…..
PAINT PARTY MARSHSCAPE is a demo exercise I did last night in anticipation of a pm “Paint Party” that is being organized here via BAC (Burke Arts Council). I know we will have a very good time setting aside time to create -which is becoming viewed more and more as a healthy habit in this busy, busy life we have.
This pastel marsh SOLD this weekend in the APS (Applachain Pastel Society) show in Blowing Rock, NC at Kevin and Judi Beck’s Gallery on mainstreet. Additional works are on display until the end of this month, March 22nd.
I had alot of fun completing this image while attending a plein air workshop that Karen White Chambers taught and hosted at Folly Beach, SC, near Charleston.
Karen has a 2009 mountain air workshop planned for this year and I highly recommend it; there is something about immersing yourself outside in the elements that studio work cannot give you.
“PALE BLUE MARSH” above is a really soft image and a fragile symbol of our landscape. It reminds me of calm, light and sunshine –all warm words and images that are evoked via the pastel medium– even with the use of chalky cool colors used in the foreground, meandering through the sloughs and leading to the marshmallow sky. This image not only finds water for me – it holds water, just like the trough depression does for the little critters that live there.
Oil on board with a box frame
30″ x 39″
$1500. until I think about it for awhile…
I am awakening. We are more than just pure existence of form. Things are becoming clearer. Life is good. I am going to add this image to my website www.rlistudios.com. It is an expression of my mood- happiness and paradoxically, saddness in the present moment.
Whenever something tragic or loss occurs do this- take one small baby step towards doing something special for yourself- and by doing so, you remain open, open to life. Yield to beauty. Surrender to what is. Think of opportunity, the old saying…”when one door closes, another one opens.”
I returned recently from a seaside retreat, hosted by Maureen Ryan Griffin, so refreshed…from taking in the marsh, the cool breeze off the ocean, the night air and the smell of dinner from the nearby restaurants. At 5:30 am, after watching the sunrise over the ocean, the bug got me again and I finished this oil.
My post is short and you can read it below as well as on the site where we are asked to comment if we like.
If you are ever wondering who you are or perhaps are awakening to- that thought- or maybe you have already felt you are a “spiritual being leading a human existence” ( a thought I have held in my consciousness since I first came across it last year after reading it somewhere and I can’t place where I read that at the moment) you might want to join the online community of readers for the book.

A New Earthby Eckhart Tolle Posted on Feb 25, 2009 (TITLE of my blog posted there)
I felt he was speaking my language in chapter one, with the first sentence, ...”one morning, just after sunrise”....how this simple shift of light coming into the world can create such a movement and shift in our own consciousness. Times are a changing.

And, now art to keep things movin’ along….. below…
”Water of the Lotus” represents the forward energy needed in all of us in order to make progress.
Much of what I create has water in it. This is an older pastel I felt needed being on this blog post.
Feel free to comment on this post. I, for one, cannot imagine anyone else having the username “roselynn” but someone did so my username for the book will have to be 1roselynn. Afterall, there can be only one me.
A girlfriend of mine has often said, “If you always do what you always did, you will always get what you always got”- (source unknown); believable and unbelievable, isn’t it?

AHhhhh…..that whisper to keep going…keep movin’ even if logic tells you otherwise. So, last weekend I joined some pastel enthusiasts near Asheville. Posted is the result. I will post it again at the final stage when I finish the sky.

I hope you like it so far; however now my Art is taking a new direction. I will be posting more landscapes in the region I am spending more of my time, the mountains.
I have reworked this posts above before handing off to my friend. I think it feels a bit less contrived now with the upgraded version below. Off to the frame shop.

Some of my FAVORITE THINGS:

Best Feel-Good Radio I discovered in 08' NC: Majic 94.1 FM but reception is not clear in this area -so maybe the upbeat attitude and type of songsets they have will catch on locally? These days the ole' IPOD works well while walkin' the river.
